PCC lends support to police dogs petition
West Midlands Police and Crime Commissioner Bob Jones has lent his
support to a petition that
seeks to make attacks on police dogs a specific offence.
Bob has signed, and the petition has already attracted nearly 7,000
Bob Jones said, "I wholeheartedly support this petition. I
have signed it and hope as many people as possible will too.
Our police dogs are key to effective policing and yet have no legal
protection. In law, an attack on a police dog is treated as
'criminal damage' - the same as kicking a car. This
needs to change.
Behaviour, Crime and Policing Bill, currently before
Parliament, includes proposals to protect assistance dogs, such as
guide dogs, from attack.
"I think that the law should be widened to offer protection to
police dogs too. I am glad to be supporting this petition
with Matt Ellis, Police and Crime Commissioner in Staffordshire,
West Midlands Police and Staffordshire Police."
