This year’s event will not only focus on police finance and new ways for businesses to report crimes more quickly, but will also look at how organisations can ensure ex-offenders are able to find a job, stay in work and grow the economy.
The West Midlands Police and Crime Commissioner wants businesses to harness the often untapped potential of people who have served their time after committing an offence.
This is not just about the principle of giving people a second chance, but also ensuring businesses don’t lose out on often qualified and hardworking individuals who want to contribute to society once again.
The hope is that employers will leave the Summit with a better understanding of how they can join a growing movement of organisations who realise that ex-offenders can offer substantial benefits.
The PCC is keen we ensure there aren’t any unnecessary barriers which are blocking recruitment and contributing to the skills gap in our region.
The key note speaker will be Dominic Headley – formerly a legal officer at Nacro, a leading social justice charity. Dominic is considered one of the foremost experts in the UK on dealing with criminal records policy. He is author of the publication ‘Recruiting safely and fairly: a practical guide to employing ex-offenders’.
Dominic has also delivered legal briefings on inclusive recruitment at roadshows in cities across England and Wales with leading global law firm Eversheds Sutherland.
He is a founding member and endorser of the Ban the Box campaign which led to the law change stopping organisations requiring job applicants to state whether they have been convicted of a criminal offence
The Summit will also have presentations on West Midlands Police new ways of Public Contact and digital reporting platform which has been customised for business crime reporting.
Mark Kenyon, Chief Finance Officer will outline the policing budget and precept for 2019-2020.
