A weapon surrender bin is a place where you can safely dispose of a knife, blade or other weapon. Once deposited in the bin then it will be secure until it is removed by professionals.

The bin has been specifically designed to offer maximum safety. Every knife surrendered into one of our bins is one less potentially dangerous weapon on the streets of the West Midlands.

The West Midlands Police and Crime Commissioner has supported the installation of weapon surrender bins in Birmingham, Dudley, Sandwell and Wolverhampton.

The Police and Crime Commissioner wishes to increase the number of weapon surrender bins across the West Midlands, with the aim of having at least one bin in each borough. So far, hundreds of weapons have been placed into the bins and have been destroyed.

West Midlands Police are promoting the use of knife bins and have held regular weeks of intensive activity in relation to knife crime. This includes conducting sweeps of parks and public spaces to remove hidden knives. They are also working with retailers and Trading Standards to prevent young people being sold knives in our shops.

The law on knives
It is illegal to carry a knife withany size blade if it is used or intended for use as a weapon. It is also illegal to carry a knife in a public place, if the blade is longer than three inches; unless it is used for a trade. It is against the law to sell a knife to anyone under the age of 18. If the police catch you with a knife in a public place, you will have to prove you were carrying it for a good reason.

If you have a query relating to the Commissioner’s work on tackling knife crime or you would like to get involved in setting up a bin in your local community then please contact the PCC’s office or call 0121 626 6060.
