A Coventry project, established in the wake of a spate of crimes, has been shortlisted for a prestigious award by the West Midlands Police and Crime Commissioner.
The Canley Pop Up Café aims to give people a sense of pride in their local community and a place for them to go.
What’s more it is paid for by money seized from criminals.
The Café’ has been shortlisted for the PCC’s Active Citizens Fund Award.
It was set up by Dr Nor Aziz in 2017 following a series of crimes in the neighbourhood, including burglary, anti-social behaviour and vandalism.
Over a warm hot chocolate or slice of cake, members of the public are able to discuss local issues, learn about Canley’s history and take part in craft activities.
Students from Warwick University support the café by delivering some of the activities.
Commenting on the project, the West Midlands Police and Crime Commissioner, David Jamieson, said: “The Canley Pop-Up Café is a great example of money being taken from criminals and put to good use.
“The café truly fosters community spirit and brings people together to celebrate the rich history of Coventry.
“It shows the spirit and pride the local community have. I am delighted to shortlist for an award.”
Dr Nor Aziz, upon finding out her project had been shortlisted, said: “I am keen to keep up the momentum now that the café is doing so well.
“I have been a resident of Canley for more than 15 years and I am happy to be giving something back to my local community.
“I noticed that crime was on the increase and that people had lost a sense of pride in the area. This café brings people together and offers them a space to take part in fun activities that keeps them off the streets.”
The Outstanding Citizens Awards take place on 5th July.
