Reason for Authority (Brief Summary for Publication)
#POWERS | We will be using Section 60 powers across Walsall this evening and until tomorrow afternoon (Mon) due to concerns over potential violent disorder.   Section 60 powers allow us to stop and search people without the need to have reasonable grounds. The powers will be in place tonight until 3pm tomorrow (Mon) and will cover the area of Walsall highlighted on the map.   The Section 60 was put in place following disorder involving a group with weapons on Drayton Street at around 9pm last night (Sat). Three teenage boys, one aged 17 and two aged 16, were quickly arrested and taken into custody on suspicion of wounding with intent. All three remain in custody while we carry out further enquiries. There was also an arson attack at a home on Pargeter Street at around 8.50pm on Friday. No-one was hurt and we continue to investigate. As always, our main focus is on keeping everyone safe. We will have extra officers on the streets tonight and over the coming says to offer reassurance. Chief Inspector Lee Wiggan, of Walsall Police, said: “We don’t use section 60 powers lightly, but we will use all our powers to ensure the safety of people in the area. We will have increased patrols in the area and uniformed officers. “These powers allow us to stop and search people we may suspect may be involved in violence, or carrying weapons, without the need to have reasonable grounds. Our aim is to keep everyone safe.”
