In reaction to the Home Secretary’s resignation, West Midlands Police and Crime Commissioner David Jamieson, said:

“The Home Secretary has taken the right decision to resign.

“For the last three weeks her department has been in chaos. It began with the Serious Violence Strategy in which the Home Secretary claimed police officer numbers had nothing to do with crime rising, despite her own department’s research disagreeing. It has continued with the disgraceful Windrush debacle, which has done huge damage to the reputation of public institutions, including the police whose job is that bit harder after the damage this has caused to community relations.

“The Prime Minister should move quickly to ensure the public can once again have confidence in the competence of the Home Office.

“My call for the Home Secretary to resign earlier this month has been vindicated.

“I look forward to working with the new Home Secretary on issues that matter to the people of the West Midlands, including reversing the huge cuts to West Midlands Police that are hampering the force’s ability to tackle crime.”
