West Midlands Police and Crime Commissioner David Jamieson has commented on the government announcement on police officer pay.

David Jamieson said:

“This is the worst of all worlds.

“The government has failed to ensure that officer pay keeps pace with the rising cost of living, this has left police forces with unfunded increases that will hit budgets and leave police staff demoralised without any commitment to their pay.

“Every 1% increase in police officer pay costs West Midlands Police £2.98 million. This announcement puts jobs at risk and risks there being fewer officers on the streets unless the government fully funds it.

“This unfunded announcement risks 60 police officer posts. If staff pay rises at the same rate, 80 could be lost.

“This announcement is a hollow gesture by the government.”
